From Dragons to RedHawks: Karl Hoium's Journey
Karl Hoium’s story is one of mentorship, discovery, and dedication. During his time at MSUM, he was deeply influenced by two figures: Dr. Martin Grindeland and Larry Scott. Dr. Grindeland, who taught several mass communication classes, shared Karl’s passion for baseball, strengthening their bond.
However, it was Larry who left an indelible mark on Karl's career. "I wouldn’t be where I am without him," Karl says.
Larry, a legend in the athletics department, spent countless hours with Karl and other students, discussing games and sharing his extensive knowledge. These conversations opened Karl’s eyes to various opportunities within sports beyond broadcasting.
Karl remembers the friendships and community at MSUM. Living on campus for almost four years allowed him to build lasting relationships.
"Coming from a small town, MSUM opened my mind to new career choices and perspectives," Karl says.
Karl remains connected to MSUM, following athletics and attending basketball and football games with his children.
Karl’s interest in sports was sparked in high school, leading him to major in Mass Communication at MSUM. But that interest led him down a new and unexpected path he met Larry, who introduced him to sports information. In the athletic department, Karl was involved in tracking stats, press releases, and other tasks that broadened his understanding of the sports industry.
An internship with the Alexandria Beetles baseball team, thanks to a high school friend, helped him fall into the sport. This experience gave him hands-on knowledge of working in a baseball team's front office.
After graduating, he returned to Alexandria as the assistant general manager.
Karl’s career with the RedHawks began when he came back to Moorhead, where his girlfriend (now wife) was studying. Starting as the Director of Sales, he has been with the RedHawks for 17 years, now serving as vice president and general manager.
Karl emphasizes the value of internships experience. "Being a sports intern showed me the behind-the-scenes of the game," he explains. The skills he learned at MSUM, such as creating press releases and handling media packages, continue to be essential in his career.
As general manager, Karl's duties range from player signings and travel arrangements to managing staff and ticket sales.
“Success in sports,” he believes, “requires hard work and dedication. It’s long hours, not just about watching the game."
Karl enjoys connecting with players from diverse backgrounds, finding the personal interactions rewarding.
Karl initiated MSUM’s Day at the RedHawks, working with Laura Caroon, assistant director of engagement for the MSUM Foundation, to create a successful event that featured a Dragons-themed RedHawks hat.
During Karl’s journey, the RedHawks have celebrated championship seasons in 2009, 2010, and 2022. Looking to the future, Karl hopes for more championships and aims to maintain the RedHawks' reputation of family-friendly, affordable entertainment. His goals include building on the team’s success, improving attendance, and enhancing the fan experience.
This year, MSUM Day at the RedHawks is scheduled for August 20. It's a special occasion that brings together MSUM students, alumni, and supporters for a day of baseball and community spirit.
