Study Abroad in Italy Program Overview:
The MSUM School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership proposal is a 7 night, 8 day program to Italy for May 2023. Students from MSUM can travel to Rome and Florence in this exciting adventure! The program will begin in Rome and end in Florence, with an additional excursion to Siena. This trip will allow students to see parts of Italy that are significant to the specific course and provides opportunities to integrate into the Italian society. Students can expect to use public and private transportation during the experience, as well as walking tours through historical cities. Students will be engaged in global healthcare discussion before, during, and after the study abroad experience.
Dr. Brandi Sillerud is leading the program from Minnesota State University Moorhead School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership. Education First (EF) is coordinating all travel arrangements and will provide a dedicated, full time tour director. This provides a safe, private, and secure travel and educational experience.
Students from nursing, graduate nursing, health services administration, masters in health administration programs, or any other student interested in learning and experiencing global health are encouraged to participate in this exciting opportunity!

EF arranges all travel and activities. We will have a private, dedicated tour director. Included in the program are: Roundtrip flights on major carriers; full-time tour director; expert local guides; accommodations with private bathrooms; land transportation (to/from airport and excursions); all breakfasts and select regional-style meals unless otherwise specified; entrances to all listed activities (healthcare and cultural).
Estimated Cost: $4105 (includes airfare, lodging, transportation, all breakfast/dinners, entrance fees) for 18-30 years old (if 30 or older, you automatically are placed in a twin room). $45 MSUM Study Abroad Application fee. Other meals/incidentals that are not listed on the itinerary. Tuition costs extra. Students will need to register for a 2 credit course (undergraduate or graduate). - Day 1:
Fly to Italy – Board your overnight flight to Rome! - Day 2 Rome:
Arrive in Rome! Our Tour Director will meet us at the airport! We will hit the ground running after our flight!
Welcome to Rome, the Eternal City! The city is an incredible mix of archeological gems, Roman genius, Renaissance art, and religious treasure. As Italy’s capital, it is also the bustling heart of this exciting country. With its fashionable shopping and café-culture, Rome really is a unique European experience. During the next few days, you will want to study the global aspects of public health in a bustling city. Where/what do people eat? Where do people live and work? Where do they access healthcare? How is healthcare funded? We will discuss these questions before and during the experience! It is important to reflect on global healthcare and social determinants of health as we travel through these cultural cities. Think and witness how another culture lives, works, and socializes!
Explore the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Navona!
Embark on a sight-seeing tour. Expect to see Trevi Foundation, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and Spanish Steps. Enjoy time in Piazza di Spagna. Climb the staircase to view the city below or take the time to wander through one of Rome’s most popular shopping areas. Witness how Romans shop and interact (think about health impacts of these behaviors that you witness!). Snag a moment to relax amongst the hustle and bustle of the city; you might enjoy a traditional Italian treat – gelato. You will also want to toss a coin in the famed Trevi Fountain and to ensure a return trip to Rome!
Pizza Dinner is included this evening! Followed by sleep – rest after a long day! - Day 3 Rome:
Guided Sightseeing of the Vatican
The world’s largest dome is located in the world’s smallest country! See both as you tour St. Peter’s Basilica, erected in Vatican City on the site where the saint was martyred. Enter the basilica under the watchful eyes of the brightly dressed Swiss Guard. Inside, admire Michelangelo’s Pieta and try to find the artist’s signature (it is the only sculpture he ever signed). Then, continue on to the Vatican Museum, where elaborate galleries packed with one artistic masterpiece after another lead you directly to the Sistine Chapel. Between 1508 and 1512, Michelangelo painted some of the world’s finest pictorial images on the Chapel’s ceiling. This was his first attempt at working in fresco, which he did by standing up and craning backwards from a scaffold.
Visit the Museo Laboratorio della Mente
Located in a former mental asylum, this museum examines the history of the institution and prompts visitors to reflect upon society’s controversial past with and progressing attitudes towards mental health treatment.

Guided Sightseeing of ancient Rome
Your guided sightseeing of ancient Rome takes you into the ancient Roman Forum, once the heart of the Roman Empire. This is where Julius Caesar gave many of his political speeches. You will also visit the Colosseum, where gladiators once battled for their lives in front of 50,000 spectators.

Travel by train to Florence
Set deep in the heart of Tuscany is one of Italy’s jewels. The city of Florence has delighted visitors for centuries with its remarkable architecture. Whether sitting by the River Arno, strolling the beautifully housed streets, or viewing the renaissance masterpieces that fill the city’s churches and museums, one can only be astonished by the feeling of true beauty. Guided Sightseeing of Florence Fall in love with Florence on your guided walking tour. See Giotto’s Bell Tower and the imposing marble cathedral of the Duomo, the Cathedral that rises far above the city’s otherwise low skyline. Stand before Ghiberti’s legendary Gates of Paradise, bronzed doors that depict scenes from the Old Testament and considered an icon of the Renaissance. You will pass the classical statues in the main square, Piazza della Signoria, here you can see where Michelangelo’s’ David originally stood. Visit Ponte Vecchio, a medieval bridge where many of Florence’s famed leather and gold artisans still keep shop.
Visit the Basilica Santa Croce
Visit Chiesa di Santa Croce, where you will see monuments to Florence Nightingale, Dante, and Michelangelo, as well as the tomb of Galileo Galilei.
Dinner is included this evening. - Day 6 Florence:
Excursion to Siena
Journey to Siena, located in the heart of Italy’s Tuscan region and long-time rival to Florence. Here you will visit the Duomo, which houses major works by Donatello and Nicola Pisano, and walk along medieval streets to the Piazza del Campo, where the famed Palio (a thrilling bareback horse race) takes place each summer. You will visit the Pinocoteca Nazionale and the Libreria Piccolomini.
Visit the Siena Duomo
Marvel at the intricate details of this 800 year old medieval cathedral. Before entering be sure to take note of the impressive facades that have detailed mosaic work, imposing gargoyles, and a mighty dome.
