Anthropology
Anthropology is the global study of humans – today and in the past while looking toward the future. An Anthropology major teaches you to approach human understanding from both a biological and cultural perspective. It also provides you the competitive advantage of cross-cultural understanding of the world that is important to many professions, and equips you with skills that can be applied in different environments, such as communication, problem solving, critical thinking, interpretation and presentation.
This degree weaves coursework through a variety of majors, with cross-listed classes in geosciences, geology, geospatial analysis and international studies, giving you a broad foundation and well-rounded experience to become a highly desired employee or graduate school candidate.
Fieldwork is a critical component of the major. You may participate in multiple formal field experiences, including a cultural tour of East Africa, A Midwest ethnographic field study or archeological field schools in Minnesota and the Dakotas, among other opportunities as they arise.
You will work in well-equipped labs and receive hands-on training with cutting-edge technology such as GPS equipment, GIS software, high precision GPS receivers, geospatial apps, geophysical equipment and drones.
Anthropology faculty actively engage with you to gain hands-on experience throughout your academic career. You will have opportunities to participate in an array of field trips, conduct studies at the Regional Science Center, learn how to operate technical GPS equipment, present research and attend local, regional and national conferences and conduct research with faculty mentors.
MSUM’s Center for Geospatial studies has joined the global conversation on how to access, create and share geospatial data to enrich the lives of its community and to involve students in this cutting-edge technology.
MSUM’s Archaeology Lab provides opportunities to receive faculty mentoring and gain hands-on experience with small- and large-scale projects in North Dakota and Minnesota involving federal, state and local agencies.
