Health & Human Performance
The Minnesota State University Moorhead Health and Human Performance Department prepares students who are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and promoting physical fitness and wellness through rewarding careers in health and physical education, athletic training, exercise science and coaching.
MSUM has a rich history as a prestigious teaching college and continues to highly value education teachers. Your classes are taught by knowledgeable and experienced professors who are committed to your teaching success. Health and Human Performance faculty members all have elementary or secondary classroom teaching experience. Plus, an advisory board of educators, alumni and faculty ensures you’re receiving the most relevant education for today’s teaching challenges.
MSUM’s Developmental Adapted Physical Education (DAPE) Certificate prepares you for licensure to teach physical education to students with special needs and/or disabilities. DAPE is identified as a teacher shortage area and greatly increases your employability within the teaching field.
The Human Performance lab will give you practical, hands-on experience on state-of-the-art testing equipment. You’ll use it for adult fitness testing to promote healthier lifestyles and for student athletes to monitor training and improve performance.
One of two Learning Communities (LC) may be of interest to you. The Health and Wellness LC is for students majoring in exercise science, athletic training or health and physical education, while the Education LC is for any education major.
MSUM offers strength and conditioning courses that will help prepare you to take certification exams by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and CPT training for the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
You’ll spend time observing, assisting and teaching in local classrooms for more than 100 hours prior to your student teaching experience, so you’ll be exceptionally prepared to lead your own classroom.
As a Wellness Educator, you can get hands-on experience assisting in the development and implementation of campus-wide health promotion campaigns designed to prevent health problems among college students and encourage healthy choices and lifestyles.
MSUM’s Health & Human Performance Department offers unique selections of learning opportunities outside of the classroom. Whether you’re gaining hands-on experience in the lab or interning in the community, we hope you will explore the options that spark your interests, strengths and passions.
